Excerpt 1:
Clements welcomed Brad in his office and in a deliberate manner said, "Brace yourself! Father Matt has been designated to be an emissary of the Pope at the Arab-Israeli summit meeting in Jordan." Brad couldn't sleep that night thinking about the journey. He wondered if Matt was too bent on climbing to the top of a pedestal. Little did he know that Matt planned also to go to Jerusalem.

Excerpt 2:
Promptly at four o'clock, a guard came into the atrium and ushered Father Matt into the Grand Conference Room. The leaders from the eight countries, with their entourage in the background, surrounded the conference table. The UN observer sat by himself at a side table.

Matt stood at a lectern. He knew the Pope's message by heart but this was neither the time nor the place to show that ability. Besides, pauses in the delivery were required to allow for translation into Arabic. He remembered the words of Arthur Clements on the significance of the meeting and, for the first time, felt jittery. Removing a file from the briefcase, he cleared his throat and began.
